We think the church needs to get entangled with the neighborhood it’s located in.  We think the church needs to love it local and invite imagination for how to announce Jesus' incredible message.  We think church should feel like a family because we actually are a family. We think the the church is the incarnate faithful presence of Jesus and called to demonstrate the gospel by loving our neighbors.

OUR PERSPECTIVE

The Jackson Neighborhood is located just east of downtown Fresno. It is 8 blocks by 12 blocks and 923 homes representing 3,300 residents. It is one square mile from First Street to Cedar Avenue and Tulare Street to Ventura Street. We see our neighborhood as a geographical area of spiritual responsibility: whether the issues are spiritual, economic, educational, environmental, political, or relational we pursue the well-being of the Jackson Neighborhood and its residents. We are compelled by a vision for what it would look like if God got His way in our neighborhood. Right now, 71% of our neighbors don’t have a high school diploma, and the average income is $26,000 a year. Metric after metric shows that our socio-economically diverse neighborhood is vulnerable and under-resourced. But that’s not the final story. We believe that in the next 15 years, we have an opportunity to steward a new future, a God-sized vision for the way things ought to be for, between and in the residents of the Jackson Neighborhood. That’s why we aim to make life-long followers of Jesus. There is no version of well-being for the Jackson Neighborhood that doesn’t include our neighbors knowing and following Jesus. That’s why we serve our neighbors’ practical needs. We see Jesus as both message and model, and He compels us to go and do what He did. And that’s why we aim to create a neighborhood where everyone can live, relate, and flourish. We hope you find something that ignites your heart and mobilizes you to get involved in God’s renewal story in your neighborhood or in Jackson! You don’t have to live here to love it here. Join us on a Sunday at any of our gatherings: 9am @3327 E. Huntington Blvd or 4-5pm @ 3263 E. Kerckhoff Ave.

How we are unique

Neighborhood Church has three expressions. We are a weekly gathering of passionate Jesus followers who prioritize Jesus, community (people), and mission (place). We started a non-profit that meets practical needs in the Jackson Neighborhood, and also a small business that employs people with barriers to employment. We are three things working together for the flourishing of the Jackson Neighborhood. You don’t have to live in the Jackson Neighborhood to be a part of our movement - but you’ll love making a difference alongside those who live there.

What drives us

The neighborhood is the place we learn and live out our identity as Christ-followers who love God and love our neighbors. Simply put: The Great Commandment (Mark 12: 30-31) assumes we know our neighbors. Love is not something that can be offered intermittently, from afar, or once a week. To live the Great Commandment in the neighborhood, amongst our neighbors, requires a new priority, presence and permanence.

JOIN A MISSION

Our church started a non-profit community development corporation that seeks the cohesive well-being of the Jackson Neighborhood and it's residents through community engagement, advocacy, and asset-based community development. Volunteers do everything from literacy mentoring for elementary kids to beautification projects to advocacy at City Hall.

Our church’s small business employs teenagers with barriers to employment. Alongside mentors, we teach job transferable skills like woodworking and produce home goods for sale. If you love mentoring teenagers, we’d love to get you involved!

OUR MANIFESTO

Jesus holds us together as a body of Christ and we affirm the historically orthodox theologies contained in the creeds, which are from the Scriptures, the authoritative Word of God.

The Apostles’ Creed | The Nicene Creed | The Lausanne Covenant | U.S. Mennonite Brethren Confession of Faith (seen below)

We believe in God as eternal Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. God created and sustains the universe. The eternal purpose of God the Father is to create a people who will bring glory to God forever. God alone is worthy of worship.

We believe that God became human in Jesus Christ. Jesus came to restore the world because humans have rejected God in disobedience. Jesus taught and modeled the way of God’s kingdom. He died on the cross, making it possible for us to accept a renewed relationship with God. He rose from the dead, broke the power of sin and death, and frees us to live in obedience to God’s will.

We believe that God the Holy Spirit invites all people to be reconciled with God and to join the global family of faith. Believers confess their faith, are baptized, and join in the celebration of the Lord’s Supper. Through the power of the Holy Spirit and guided by the Bible, members of the church seek to live as followers of Christ and invite others to experience this new life.

As Christians, we are called to turn:

  • from ignorance of God to a personal relationship with God

  • from bondage of sin and past mistakes to freedom, forgiveness, and healing

  • from individualism to interdependence with others in the local church

  • from lifestyle choices that harm us, others, and the earth to choices that nurture wholeness, healing, joy, and peace

  • from hating enemies and ignoring neighbors to showing love and justice to all

  • from loving possessions to sharing with all in need

  • from aimless existence to a mission of representing and proclaiming God’s kingdom on earth

As Christians, we look forward to the day when God will once again send Jesus to bring all things under God’s eternal rule.
